Championship Archives: The First SparkThe Story of the 1st "Peace" (Iraq) Shinkyokushin Karate Championship (2008)Baghdad - Kadhimiya | August 22, 2008In a pivotal historical moment for martial arts in Iraq, and within the ancient district of Kadhimiya, the courtyard of "Fresh" Primary School hosted the birth of the first official gathering for the worlds strongest karate style. The 1st Iraq Shinkyokushin Karate Championship, dubbed the "1st Peace Championship," was held as the foundation stone for the World Karate Organization (WKO) - Iraq Branch.Discipline and National SpiritThe championship opened with an atmosphere of prestige and patriotism. Following the Iraqi National Anthem, participants and attendees observed a minute of silence in honor of Iraq's martyrs. In a scene reflecting true "Budo" values, the players recited the martial arts oath led by the senior practitioner and referee, Salah Abdul Mahdi Shiyaa. This event marked the launch of competitions under the umbrella of WKO Iraq, established before the formal founding of the Oyama Karate Organization.Broad Participation and National UnityMore than a sporting event, the championship was a national demonstration of unity, bringing together over 50 fighters from various districts of Baghdad and the Dhi Qar Governorate (Nasiriyah). These athletes, representing various ages and ranks, created a tapestry of athletic cohesion. The stands saw a significant public turnout exceeding 60 spectators, who enthusiastically engaged with the skills displayed by the champions.Demonstration of Power and TameshiwariOne of the most breathtaking highlights was the high-level technical demonstration performed by the Branch Chief of WKO Iraq, Shihan Ayad Al-Khafaji. He performed an ice-breaking (Tameshiwari) feat in front of the audience, embodying the physical strength and mental focus that define Shinkyokushin fighters.Competitions and OfficiatingThe official bouts were organized into three main categories:Open Age CategoryOpen Youth CategoryOpen Seniors CategoryA distinguished judging panel, known for its expertise and integrity, oversaw the matches, led by Ayad Al-Khafaji, Salah Abdul Mahdi, and Luay Hassoun.Media Coverage and Honoring ChampionsThe championship received significant media attention, with Iraq Sport TV covering the events and conducting interviews with organizers and participants, documenting the very beginnings of this art. The historic day concluded with the distribution of commemorative medals and trophies to the winners, ensuring the "1st Peace Championship" remains a memory etched in the heart of Iraqi Karate.Global Reach StrategyIn an exclusive statement to the sports channel, Shihan Ayad Al-Khafaji, Branch Chief of WKO Iraq, confirmed that this championship was the final stage of a precise selection process:"We held the 1st Peace Shinkyokushin Karate Championship as the final qualifiers, following preliminary trials held at each individual Dojo. This has led to the final selection of elite fighters for the World Cup scheduled to be held in Moscow in June 2009."Emerging Stars of the FutureThe championship embodied the spirit of continuity. Young fighter Moussa Abdul Karim Al-Mousawi drew attention by securing first place despite being the youngest team member at just 7 years old. His father stated:"I introduced my son to this sport in 2006. Thanks to the efforts of instructor Ayad Al-Khafaji, Moussa achieved first place despite his young age."High Intensity and Inter-Province CompetitionChampion Salah Abdul Mahdi, the first-place winner in the Open Seniors category, expressed his pride in this historic gathering under the banner of the World Karate Organization (WKO) Japan. He noted that preparations had been intensive for over three months and praised the surprising technical level of the Dhi Qar team:"We were genuinely surprised by the excellent levels shown by the Nasiriyah team. They had fighters who excelled technically; we wish them better luck in future events."Hall of Fame: Final Results of the 1st Peace Championship (2008)The competitions, supervised by the Technical Committee of the Iraq Branch, crowned the following champions:1.
